Most people regard a hot shower or bath as one of life's
little pleasures. However, what many people don't realize is
the danger of chlorine and chemicals in the water. Although
chlorine is universally used to disinfect water, it is not
safe for drinking, showering or bathing.
Dr Riddle of Kemysts
laboratory writes about that "Chlorine is used almost
universally in the treatment of public water supply because of
its toxic effect on harmful bacteria and other waterborne,
disease-causing organisms. But there is growing evidence that
chlorine in water may actually pose serious health risks when
it is absorbed into human body over long period. These effects
of chlorine may result from either ingestion or absorption
through the skin.
Studies have linked
chlorine and its by-products to cancer of the bladder, liver,
stomach, rectum, and colon, as well as heart disease,
atherosclerosis, anaemia, high blood pressure, and allergic
reactions. There is also evidence that chlorine can destroy
protein in our body and cause adverse effects on skin and
hair.
The presence of chlorine in water may also contribute to the
formation of chloramines, which can cause taste and odor
problems. Since chlorine is required by public health
regulations to be present in all public drinking water
supplies, it is up to the individual to remove it at the
point-of-use in the home"
U.S. Council on Environment Quality writes about chlorine.
Asthma, bronchitis, eczema and many other common ailments are
very negatively affected by inhalation and absorption of
chlorine and other chemicals while showering. Breast, colon
and bladder cancer have all been linked to exposure of
chlorine from drinking and shower water. "Cancer rates for
people on chlorinated water systems is 96% higher than for
those on non-chlorinated water systems..."
Are shower filters really as important as drinking water
filters?
Shower filters can offer surprising health and cosmetic
benefits by filtering out chlorine and other chemicals from
shower water. It has been shown that we take 7-10 times more
chlorine and other chemicals from showering than from drinking
water. A recent study published in the American Journal of
Public Health documented the link between chlorine and breast,
colon and bladder cancer and stated that "2/3 of the harmful
exposure is from showering..." The U.S. EPA states that "Due
to chlorine and showering, there is an elevated level of
chloroform gas in virtually every home..."
When chlorine vaporizes it combines with airborne particles
and forms chloroform gas, a known cause and contributor to
asthma and other respiratory problems.
In a warm shower the pores of the skin open allowing rapid
absorption of chlorine and other chemicals. Also, do to the
fact that chlorine and other chemicals vaporize at a low
temperature and at a faster rate than water the steam, we
inhale while showering has highly concentrated levels of
chlorine vapours.
Which are the
benefits of Columbia shower filter and its unique system?
Columbia
shower filter provide several benefits such as chlorine
removal, reduction of soap scum, prevention of dry skin and
hair and the removal of unpleasant odours. It helps balance
water ph for better sudsing and cleaning and removes synthetic
chemicals in the water that can vaporize and be inhaled or
absorbed through the skin. Even if you have un-chlorinated
well water, there are benefits to using a shower filter in
your home. The elimination of chlorine and chemicals from your
shower water is as important as the removal of these
contaminants from your drinking water. Some of the reasons for
reducing chlorine and synthetic chemicals levels in your
shower water include:
-
Chlorine bonds to skin and hair
destroying the natural bacterial balance. This may lead to
dryness, itching, flaking and premature skin aging.
-
Chlorine gas, chlorine by-products such
as Trihalomethanes (THM's), chloroform and many synthetic
chemicals may become vaporized in hot shower water and
become a concentrated area for toxic gasses. You are
consistently inhaling these gasses with regular shower
activity and this may pose a long term health risk.
-
Chlorine and most other chemicals can
also be absorbed by the skin. These chemicals can
therefore enter the body even without direct ingestion
from drinking water. You may absorb more chlorine and
synthetic chemicals through the skin during your shower
than through drinking unfiltered tap water.
Even more noticeable, and probably more
popular, are the surprising cosmetic benefits of shower
filters. By removing chlorine and other chemicals from shower
water, you'll notice softer skin and hair almost immediately.
Anyone who has ever swum in a chlorinated pool can relate to
the harsh effects that chlorine has on skin and hair.
Showering in filtered water allows skin and hair to retain
moisture for a healthier look and feel.
